Why We Still Write CSS by Hand

Not out of nostalgia. Because the platform got good, and a stack you did not choose is a stack you cannot debug at two in the morning.

The browser now does natively most of what the tooling was invented to work around. Grid, custom properties, container queries, nesting. The problem those layers solved has largely stopped existing.

What we gained back

• The file you read is the file that ships.
• No build step between a typo and seeing it.
• Nothing to upgrade on somebody else's schedule.

This is not advice for everyone. A team of thirty on one product needs guardrails a small team does not. But the default should be the platform, and the abstraction should have to earn its place.

Every layer you add is a layer you will one day have to debug through.
