Design That Survives the Handoff

6 min read Neiyoz

Most design does not fail in the file. It fails in the gap between the file and the build, where decisions nobody wrote down end up being made twice.

A design file is a proposal, not a product. Everything in it still has to survive being read by someone who was not in the room when it was drawn, under a deadline, with questions the file does not answer.

The gap is where the work leaks

Spacing that was deliberate reads as arbitrary. A state nobody drew gets invented on the spot. None of this is anyone failing at their job — it is a file being asked to carry more than a file can carry.

If a decision only exists in the layout, it is not a decision. It is a coincidence waiting to be undone.

What we do instead

  • Name the rule, not the value. "Two steps of the scale" outlives "24px".
  • Draw the states nobody asks for — empty, loading, too long, failed.
  • Hand over the reasoning next to the screen, not in a document nobody opens.

None of it is glamorous. All of it is the difference between a build that looks like the design and one that merely resembles it.
