Colour Is the Last Decision

If the layout only works in colour, the layout does not work. We design in grey until the structure holds on its own, and colour arrives to do a job.

Colour is the loudest tool in the box, and loud tools hide quiet problems. In greyscale, a weak hierarchy has nowhere to go.

What colour is for

• Saying what kind of thing this is.
• Saying what state it is in.
• Pointing at the one thing that matters on the screen.

Everything beyond that is mood, and mood is cheap to add once the structure is standing.
